In \u00a0the \u00a0context \u00a0of \u00a0his \u00a0habilitation, \u00a0Lucci\u2019s \u00a0research \u00a0deals \u00a0with \u00a0the \u00a0topic \u00a0of \u00a0asceticism \u00a0and \u00a0its reception in the humanities of the 20th and 21st centuries, focusing on philosophy and cultural theory and history. The \u00a0term \u00bbasceticism\u00ab, \u00a0which \u00a0originally \u00a0oscillated \u00a0between \u00a0an \u00a0objective \u00a0connotation \u00a0(a masterly work done to an object) and a later, subjective connotation (an exercise executed on the \u00a0self \u00a0with \u00a0the \u00a0goal \u00a0of \u00a0perfection), \u00a0gains \u00a0a \u00a0strong \u00a0ethical \u00a0and \u00a0political \u00a0significance \u00a0in antiquity, \u00a0as \u00a0Pierre \u00a0Hadot \u00a0and \u00a0Michel \u00a0Foucault \u00a0have \u00a0repeatedly \u00a0pointed \u00a0out. \u00a0Gradually, asceticism \u00a0is \u00a0transformed \u00a0into \u00a0an \u00bbaesthetics \u00a0of \u00a0existence\u00ab, \u00a0in \u00a0which \u00a0life, \u00a0form \u00a0and \u00a0style merge.<\/p>\n<p>From the beginning, the ascetic is the one who has completely transformed his or her own life through \u00a0a \u00a0series \u00a0of \u00a0exercises, \u00a0and \u00a0has \u00a0attained \u00a0a \u00a0form-of-life \u00a0based \u00a0on \u00a0a \u00a0series \u00a0of \u00a0individual practices that have radically and profoundly changed his nature and his original being. These practices have given him a completely new character, a character that differs entirely from the traditions, \u00a0morality \u00a0and \u00a0the \u00a0customs \u00a0in \u00a0his \u00a0community \u00a0of \u00a0origin \u00a0and \u00a0home \u00a0country \u00a0(also \u00a0in terms of religion and politics).This change, the separation from the world and the previous life, takes place through a radical transformation \u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0life \u00a0practices \u00a0and \u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0exercises \u00a0through \u00a0which \u00a0the \u00a0subject \u00a0performs itself.<\/p>\n<p>The subject turns into a laboratory in which the \u00bbspiritual exercises\u00ab function as \u00bbtechnologies of the self\u00ab, whose aim is a feedback-effect: they influence the constitution of the subject and thus modify its nature. This group of exercises \u00a0should always to be understood as a set of practices that are directly related to a state of the world, to a tradition or to a collectivity. Those who choose to radically transform \u00a0their \u00a0own \u00a0life \u00a0through \u00a0exercises \u00a0that \u00a0will \u00a0change the \u00a0outward \u00a0appearance \u00a0and \u00a0the inner \u00a0form, \u00a0do so through \u00a0a \u00a0precisely \u00a0defined \u00a0set \u00a0of \u00a0cultural \u00a0techniques \u00a0that \u00a0cause \u00a0isolation, but that at the same time relate the subject to others.<\/p>\n<p>Image:\u00a0John Bigg: The Dinton Hermit, Line engraving by Wilkes,\u00a0Wonderful Magazine and Marvellous Chronicle, London: C.
